Glaucoma Evaluations

Protecting your vision is our primary concern at King Eye Care. Glaucoma is a severe eye disease that can silently steal your vision if it goes undetected or untreated. Our detailed glaucoma screenings are created to detect the first symptoms of this disease — allowing you to preserve your vision for the rest of your life.

Why Early Detection Matters

Given that the disease is virtually asymptomatic until later in its course, when it has already caused irreversible damage, regular eye exams are crucial. Glaucoma can usually be controlled, but it cannot be cured, so early detection is important to limit visual impairment.

At Dr. Johal & Associates, we do glaucoma screenings in every complete comprehensive eye exam. Utilizing our state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation, we can detect the earliest signs of glaucoma, sometimes even before you notice changes to your vision.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve, the part of your eye that creates the images you see and transmits them from the eye to the brain. This damage is usually in the form of increased eye pressure (intraocular pressure). The added pressure can gradually wear away at the optic nerve fibers, resulting in blindness.

The most popular type of glaucoma is termed open-angle glaucoma, which progresses slowly and does not usually exhibit noticeable symptoms in the beginning. If not detected early and treated, open-angle glaucoma can lead to tunnel vision and total blindness.

Our Glaucoma Evaluation Process

  • Check the pressure in your eyes (tonometry) to screen for high eye pressure.
  • Look at the optic nerve (ophthalmoscopy) for signs of damage or abnormalities.
  • Have a visual field test to check if you have lost side vision (peripheral vision), a sign of glaucoma.
  • Measure corneal thickness (pachymetry). Thinner corneas may be a risk factor for glaucoma.
  • Apply optical coherence tomography (OCT) — a cutting-edge imaging technique to produce high-resolution images of the optic nerve and the tissue around it.

If you’re worried about developing glaucoma, we will explain what to do next, including additional testing, treatment possibilities, and connections to reliable glaucoma doctors.

How Is Glaucoma Managed?

Glaucoma damage is irreversible, but treatment can vastly slow or stop progression. Management options include:

  • Medicated eye drops to reduce eye pressure.
  • Medications to lower eye pressure by mouth.
  • Laser therapy promotes the flow of fluid out of the eye.
  • Surgeries are needed to develop new drainage systems or enhance the old ones.

Protect Your Vision With Regular Glaucoma Evaluations

Glaucoma is sometimes referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” but vision loss can be averted with periodic eye exams and early treatment.
